a company with an exclusive public-service franchise for the distribution of natural gas. Its economic activity consists of the development and operation of the public gas-distribution network in the northern coastal region of Portugal. This public-service franchise was assigned to Portgás by the Portuguese state in 1993 for a period of 35 years (until 2028). The franchise area covers 29 municipalities in the districts of Oporto, Braga and Viana do Castelo. At present, Portgás is jointly controlled by Grupo EDP and the undertakings GDF International SA and ELYO SA (at present, Suez Energie Services).
